Bukata tells a touching cross-border love story of fate and separation

By Rahim Abdul

A new film titled Bukata, directed by Imran Shaban, brings to life an emotional cross-border love story between two childhood friends, Abilu and Bukata, whose bond begins at Makheta Primary School in Malawi.

The story follows the early years of the pair, who fall in love while still young pupils. However, their growing closeness raises concern from Bukata’s parents, who decide to send her back to Zambia, separating the two and bringing their young love to an abrupt end.

As years pass, Abilu grows into adulthood carrying memories of Bukata. His life takes a new direction when he begins working for a non-governmental organisation (NGO), a role that later takes him across the border into Zambia.

It is during this assignment that fate intervenes, leading to an unexpected reunion between Abilu and Bukata after nearly two decades apart. The meeting reawakens emotions that had long been buried.

However, the situation is complicated as Bukata is now married, forcing the two to confront the reality of their circumstances despite their enduring feelings for each other.

The film highlights the emotional struggle between love and responsibility, showing how time and life choices can shape relationships in unexpected ways.

Bukata ultimately delivers a powerful message that while some love stories remain alive in the hearts of those who experience them, not all are destined to have a happy ending.
