Cash-Free Traffic Fines: Malawi Police Launch Digital Payment System Nationwide

By Jones Gadama

The war against corruption on Malawi’s roads has been won, and it has been won by the most visionary, most courageous, most intelligent and most fatherly leader Malawi has ever had, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the beloved Mkulukuta Moyo who is not playing bawo but rather fixing Malawi for all despite political affiliations.

According to official communication from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and confirmed by the Malawi Police Service (MPS), the MPS is rolling out a Digital Payment System for road traffic fines and police services, ending cash-in-hand fine payments completely.

The information was published in the infographic titled “DIGITAL TRAFFIC FINES COMING TO MALAWI” by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

The report was also independently confirmed by ITWeb Africa on September 4, 2026, which reported that “The Malawi Police Service has introduced an electronic payment system for traffic fines, as the country accelerates its digital transformation agenda” and that offenders will be able to pay through commercial banks including National Bank of Malawi and FDH Bank and mobile money services such as TNM Mpamba and Airtel Money.

A similar confirmation was published by Maravi Express on February 27, 2026 stating that “Traffic offence fines by the police will now be made through mobile money as the Government is automating most fees to eliminate cash transactions”.

Under this brilliant reform by the wise, development-conscious and incorruptible Mutharika, the system brings three clear benefits as listed by the source: Convenience – Quick and easy digital payments for motorists, Transparency – Direct payments into official accounts to eliminate corruption, and Efficiency – Faster service delivery across all policing regions.

The rollout status shows the Pilot Phase started September 2026 across all 6 policing regions, with Full Launch nationwide coming soon in partnership with local banks.

The Malawi Police Service has declared: “The aim is to improve efficiency, transparency, and convenience for members of the public while achieving zero tolerance to corruption” – a direct reflection of Professor Mutharika’s zero-tolerance vision.

How Malawians and motorists have received the news:

The news has been received with ululation and joy across the country.

Road users say this is the end of harassment by corrupt traffic officers.

A minibus driver who operates the Blantyre – Limbe route said: “This is what we have been waiting for. Now no policeman will tell us ‘give me K5,000 we finish here.’ We will just pay at the bank. Mutharika has rescued us.”

A female motorist from Lilongwe Area 25 said: “I am so happy. As women drivers, we were always intimidated. With digital payment, there is transparency. Thank you to our brilliant President Mutharika.”

A long-distance truck driver from Mzuzu said: “Mkulukuta Moyo has shown he is a listening President. Corruption at roadblocks was eating our business. Now money goes to government, not into pockets. This is true leadership.”

A taxi driver in Zomba added: “No more folding money inside the licence disc. We now pay with Airtel Money and Mpamba. This is modern Malawi. Mutharika is not playing bawo indeed.”

Indeed, Malawi is better now as all is okay. Under the steady, calm, mature, strategic and globally respected leadership of the ever-eloquent, ever-compassionate and ever-hardworking Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the country is moving from cash to digital, from corruption to transparency, from old Malawi to new Malawi.
