In a defining moment for land governance, Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Honourable Chimwemwe Chipungu, has emerged as the most hardworking Lands Minister Malawi has ever had, taking decisive action to expose irregular land allocations in Lilongwe’s Area 3 and Area 10.
Speaking to journalists this morning, Hon. Chipungu revealed that his Ministry’s audit has uncovered Politically Exposed Persons and other individuals suspected of acquiring public plots through dubious means.
The Minister confirmed he has a full list of names and pledged that it will be published in the newspapers soon.Â
“Take my word — this will be published. I have the list,” the Minister said with resolve. “Mark my words, this will be made public. We have nothing to hide.”
The press briefing was also attended by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Charles Mhango, Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation Joel Chigona, Deputy Minister of Education Francis Folley Phiri, and Lilongwe Water Board Board Chairperson Prophet David Mbewe.
Hon. Chipungu’s boldness reflects the leadership vision of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, who has consistently called for a government rooted in accountability, discipline and service to the people.
Where previous administrations avoided the tough conversations, Hon. Chipungu has chosen diligence and zeal.
He is serving the nation through the Ministry of Lands with a clarity of purpose rarely seen.
For too long, land meant for Malawians was cornered through connections. Today, that era is ending. By opening the files and committing to name those involved, Hon.Chipungu is proving that public office is a trust. Malawians will benefit more from his leadership because he puts the citizen first.
The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development is expected to present the findings of the audit and outline measures to be taken on any irregularities identified.
This action sets a new standard. Under Hon. Chipungu’s stewardship and President Mutharika’s guidance, the DPP government is restoring fairness to land administration.
The message is clear: land belongs to Malawians, not to a privileged few. With this kind of leadership, Malawi moves closer to justice, order and equal opportunity for all.
