Disaster management department advises people on lightning prevention

By Staff Reporter

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has advised people to avoid hilltops and open areas in order to reduce the risk of being struck by lightning.

The sentiments come as the country is receiving heavy rains with strong winds and lightning

Speaking in an interview with 247 Malawi News, DoDMA chairperson Chipiliro Khamula said people should never shelter under an isolated tree and should immediately get away from ponds, lakes and other water bodies when it starts to rain heavily.

He said people should be indoors and make sure they stay away from objects that use electricity.

According to DoDMA, currently 42 people have died and 85 others have been injured due to lightning strikes and structure collapses during the current rainy season.
