Expert urges strict environmental compliance in proposed fertilizer factory project

By Rahim Abdul

Environmental expert has urged authorities to strictly follow proper procedures in the proposed establishment of a fertilizer manufacturing factory in the country.

The expert, Dominic Nyasulu, says the coming of a fertilizer production plant could be a major relief to many farmers who are currently struggling with the rising cost of fertilizer.

Nyasulu noted that local production of fertilizer has the potential to reduce dependency on imports and help stabilize prices in the agricultural sector.

However, he emphasized that all stakeholders must work together to ensure that environmental protection standards are fully observed throughout the process.

He warned that industrial projects of this nature should not be rushed, as failure to follow guidelines could lead to serious environmental consequences in the long run.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has confirmed that several procedures must be completed before approving the proposed Mulalo Granular fertilizer factory.

MEPA stated that the project, owned by businessman Napoleon Dzombe, is still under review and must meet all required environmental safeguards before operations can begin in Dowa.

The Authority further stressed that only after full compliance with environmental regulations will permission be granted for the factory to start its fertilizer production activities.
