United Transformation Movement (UTM) president,Dalitso Kabambe, has defended his continued public commentary on Malawi’s economic situation, saying his views are motivated by patriotism and a desire to contribute solutions to the country’s challenges rather than political interests.
Kabambe who is also an economist, said in an interview with 247 Malawi News that he believes it is his responsibility to speak openly about the country’s economic difficulties and encourage constructive discussions aimed at finding lasting solutions.
He said remaining silent while Malawians continue to struggle would not be in the country’s best interest.

His remarks come after today’s Nation Publications Limited (NPL) newspaper published a front-page story titled ‘Budget in Peril’, which reports that key economic targets, including growth, inflation and the fiscal deficit, are already off track just three months after the 2026/27 National Budget was presented.
In response, the former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor questioned whether the country’s economic situation is improving and called on Malawians to share the challenges they are facing in their daily lives.
He cited the rising cost of living, shortages of foreign exchange, high prices of essential goods, limited business opportunities, youth unemployment and access to affordable farm inputs as some of the issues affecting citizens.
Kabambe urged Malawians to engage in respectful, honest and solution-oriented discussions, expressing hope that such dialogue would help restore prosperity and improve the country’s economic future.
