LILONGWE, — Ministry of Health and Sanitation has begun introducing a digital patient records system aimed at modernising healthcare delivery and gradually reducing reliance on traditional paper-based health passport books in public health facilities.
The new platform, known as the Malawi Health Care Information System (Mahis), is designed to electronically manage patient information and support the delivery of healthcare services through a more integrated digital system.
Authorities are currently testing the programme at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre, alongside selected health centres across the country.
The pilot programme marks an important step in Malawi’s broader efforts to digitise public services and strengthen the management of health information within the country’s healthcare system.
If successfully implemented nationwide, Mahis could eventually transform how patients’ medical information is recorded, stored and accessed, replacing the long-standing dependence on hard-copy health passport books used by patients seeking treatment at public health facilities.
