Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) President Isaac Osman has issued a stern call to the Football Association of Malawi and NBS Bank, demanding formal public apologies within 24 hours following an incident at a stadium in Lilongwe that allegedly saw the city’s Mayor subjected to humiliating and disrespectful treatment.
According to information surrounding the incident, the Mayor was reportedly blocked from accessing designated areas and handled in an undignified manner by security personnel, despite holding a public office. The development has since sparked outrage among local government leaders.

In a strongly worded statement, Osman began by extending an apology to the Mayor of Lilongwe for the manner in which he was treated, describing the conduct as regrettable and unbefitting of public standards.
“As MALGA President, I am deeply concerned by this matter, which has caused distress across all councils,” Osman said, emphasizing that the issue goes beyond an individual and touches on the respect and dignity of local government leadership nationwide.
He warned that such behavior will not be tolerated, calling on both the Football Association of Malawi and NBS Bank to take immediate corrective steps, including issuing public apologies within the stipulated timeframe.
“This behavior will not be condoned and we expect immediate corrective action to uphold the dignity and respect due to the office of the Mayor and all local authorities,” he added.
The incident has sparked concern among councils across the country with calls for accountability growing louder as stakeholders await responses from the implicated institutions.
