August 2026 will be remembered as the month the Ministry of Homeland Security moved from promises to action on the ground.
Under the decisive leadership of Hon. Peter Mukhito, MP, the ministry registered 10 major achievements that are already restoring confidence and safety across Malawi.
The month began with a bold 4-day Northern Region Security Inspection Tour.
Minister Mukhito, accompanied by Deputy Minister Hon. Norman Chisale, MP, hit the ground in Karonga to assess performance of departments and the progress of development projects under his ministry.
At the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, he engaged officers directly on service delivery.
He then proceeded to Karonga Prison where he inspected a newly constructed cell block and other development initiatives.
In a show of support for self-reliance, Minister Mukhito donated K2 million to Karonga Prison to purchase additional manual brick moulding machines.
The donation is expected to expand the prison’s brick-production capacity, strengthen infrastructure development at the institution, and increase revenue through sale of bricks to surrounding communities.
He commended prison authorities for embracing productive initiatives that improve conditions and reduce dependence.
Security and justice delivery also took center stage. The Minister warned Karonga residents against mob justice and urged them to work with traditional leaders and the police.
He issued a stern warning against the misuse of public funds, stressing that resources must deliver tangible benefits to Malawians and not end up in a few pockets.
August also saw major strides in police infrastructure. The ministry welcomed a K2 billion commitment by Illovo Sugar Malawi toward construction of a new police station at Nchalo in Chikwawa.
Minister Mukhito described it as an important investment in community security that aligns with government’s goal of bringing services closer to the people.
On housing and welfare, the ministry continued inspecting police and prison housing projects in Rumphi, reinforcing government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of officers.
This is in line with the broader directive that constituencies can now use the K5 billion Constituency Development Fund to construct police units, with government providing officers and technical support.
In a major boost to law enforcement capacity, the Malawi Police Service was authorized to recruit more than 6,000 new police officers.
The recruitment drive is aimed at increasing police visibility, improving response times, and making communities safer.
All these achievements reflect the clear vision of His Excellency the President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. Under APM’s leadership, Malawi is witnessing discipline, accountability, and results in the security sector.
The President’s directive that citizens must feel safe and that public resources must work for the people is being realized through Minister Mukhito’s hands-on approach.
From fighting corruption, to expanding prison productivity, to recruiting thousands of officers, August has proven that the Homeland Security Ministry is delivering.
Malawians can be confident that under President APM, the country is safer, institutions are stronger, and the vision of a secure and prosperous Malawi is becoming reality.
