The claim that Gender Minister Hon. Navicha influenced the selection of her daughter Ireen Navicha to represent Malawi at Miss World 2026 is not only false, it is a deliberate political smear meant to distract from the facts.
There is no single day, no single meeting, no single phone call where Hon. Navicha interfered in the Miss Malawi selection process.
To suggest otherwise is to insult the independence of the Miss Malawi Organisation and to politicize a social platform that has always belonged to young women, not politicians.
The truth is simple. Ireen Navicha did not start in pageants yesterday because her mother is a minister. She has been competing and winning for years on her own merit.
Ireen first entered the beauty industry in 2018 and went on to represent Malawi at Miss Universe, where she carried the national flag with pride. She has since built a portfolio of wins and advocacy work that stands separate from any political office.
Her experience, poise, and years of preparation made her a natural contender this year.
Miss Malawi is not run from a government office. It is a social, non-political organization governed by its own board, judges and published criteria.
Spokesperson Stephen Mdala has explained that age was considered because Miss World guidelines target contestants aged 17 to 27, and the organization sought a representative who fits squarely within that window for the September 5 2026 final. That is an organizational decision, not a ministerial directive.
Thandi Chisi, born 13 February, remains eligible, but eligibility is not the same as selection.
Every national pageant weighs experience, stage presence, advocacy record and readiness.
Dragging Hon. Navicha and her family into this debate serves only one purpose: to give the MCP ammunition to turn a noble contest into a political football.
It is unfair to Ireen, who has worked for this moment since 2018, and it is unfair to the Miss Malawi Organisation, whose mandate is to pick the best ambassador for Malawi, not to appease political gossip.
If there are questions about procedure, the proper people to answer are the organizers, not a cabinet minister who has had zero role in the process.
Malawi deserves pageants judged on talent and track record, not on conspiracy.
Ireen Navicha earned this spot the same way she earned Miss Universe and every title before it: through work, discipline, and merit.
