Police in Dowa have arrested 12 suspects in connection with the theft and vandalism of school property worth over K1,700,000 at Mpalankhwali Primary School, Traditional Authority Mkukula.

The incident occurred on April 30, 2026, at around 19:00 hours. The suspects, aged between 19 and 35, allegedly stormed the school premises while armed with metal bars, stones, and tree branches.

Sub. Insp. Alice Sumani-Dowa Police Station Publicist.

It has been established that earlier that evening, the school’s headteacher had gone to a nearby village to attend a funeral ceremony. Upon his return, he was informed by fellow teachers that some nearby villagers were planning demonstrations against him. Shortly after, the group arrived at the school, damaged staffroom windows, stole books, and later proceeded to the headteacher’s house, where they vandalized windows and stole property.

The matter was immediately reported to police, who rushed to the scene but found the perpetrators already gone.

Following investigations, 12 suspects were apprehended in connection with the incident.

The suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges leveled against them.

Police in Dowa strongly condemn acts of violence and property damage and assure the public of continued efforts to safeguard schools and communities.
