President Chakwera engages Diaspora Malawians in Zimbabwe

President Chakwera who has been on a two-day official visit to Zimbabwe on Thursday morning took time to engage with Malawians who are living in Zimbabwe. The event took place at the Malawi embassy offices in Harare.

In his address, President Chakwera who opted to use Chichewa in his address urged those in diaspora not to forget home. He called for collaborative efforts from those in diaspora in the fight against poverty in Malawi  “ osamaiwala kumudzi, Tithandizane  kuthetsa umphawi” . He assured them that his government is coming up with policies that will see the country  heading in the right direction economically.

The President also touched on the issue of dual citizenship highlighting that Parliament  already  agreed on the issue  “ Tidavomeleza kale  ku nuyumba  ya malamulo kuti mukhoza  kukhala mzika za  maiko awili“. It has been established however, that although parliament passed the dual citizenship bill, it has not yet been operationalized President Chakwera was  welcomed at the event  with Malawian  traditional dances  and songs .

Its is estimated that over 5 million people in Zimbabwe are of from Malawi . Zimbabwean president Emerson Mnangagwa has spoken highly of the strong relationship Malawi has with Zimbabwe. President Chakwera later visited the heroes acre where he laid a wreath.
