Rubio says Lebanon and Israel hold direct talks at State Department, hopes for security deal outside Hezbollah’s shadow

By Burnett Munthali

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that officials from Lebanon and Israel are holding talks at the State Department in Washington.

The discussions mark a rare moment of direct diplomatic engagement between the two neighbors, whose relations have long been defined by conflict.

Rubio said he expressed hope that the meetings would produce a joint statement and a concrete action plan.

The proposed plan focuses on a security track for southern Lebanon that would operate separately from the influence of Hezbollah.

Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, has historically dominated security and political decisions in Lebanon’s border regions.

Washington has repeatedly pushed for mechanisms that would strengthen the Lebanese state’s authority over its territory.

Officials involved in the talks have not yet released details of the proposals under discussion.

The State Department said the goal is to reduce cross-border tensions and prevent further escalation along the Blue Line.

Diplomats in the region view any agreement reached outside Hezbollah’s framework as a significant shift in Lebanon’s security dynamics.

Rubio’s announcement comes amid broader US efforts to stabilize the Middle East while limiting Iranian influence through its regional proxies.

Whether Beirut and Jerusalem can translate the Washington talks into lasting action remains uncertain, but the meeting itself signals a new diplomatic opening.
