Speaker Gotani Hara elected Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Africa Chairperson

Malawi’s Speaker of Parliament Honourable Catherine Gotani Hara, MP has been elected Executive Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) African Region.

According to the statement from the Parliament press team,The Speaker was elected on Monday, 6th June 2022 on the sidelines of the 52nd Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association – African Region being held from the 3rd to 9th June in Sierra Leone’s capital city, Freetown.

The African Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association comprises of the 63 national and subnational legislatures.

The CPA Africa Region is governed by a Coordinating Committee and Executive Committee which is made up of representatives from across the region. There is also a Regional Representatives Committee which reports to the Executive Committee.

The Mission for CPA Africa is to “To promote and protect the interests and perspectives of CPA Africa Regional Parliaments and countries, into the Commonwealth and beyond, and to promote gender equality, emancipation of women, and respect for human rights, freedoms, democracy and good governance.”

Gotani Hara takes over from Hon. Justin B. Muturi, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya.
