FDH Bank Suspends Football Sponsorships Over Governance Dispute

By Rahim Abdul

FDH Bank Plc has taken a dramatic step in Malawi’s football landscape by suspending all its sports related sponsorships, citing serious concerns over governance wrangles that disrupted the launch of the 2026 FDH Bank Premiership season.

In a press statement released on April 26, 2026, FDH Bank Plc the main sponsor of the top-flight league and the Malawi National Football Team expressed “deep concern and disappointment” over the events that unfolded at Kamuzu Stadium during the planned season opener on Saturday.

The bank pointed to an ongoing impasse between the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) as the root cause of the disruption, warning that such conflicts are damaging not only to the game but also to corporate partnerships.

According to the statement, the standoff has undermined the commercial viability of FDH Bank’s involvement in football and negatively affected its brand image, prompting immediate action.

“As a result, FDH Bank Plc has suspended all sports-related sponsorships and activities pending a comprehensive review,” reads part of the statement.

The bank further indicated that the review process will assess whether its partnerships align with its brand values and expectations, and will guide the next course of action.

This development sends shockwaves across Malawi’s football fraternity, where FDH Bank has been a key financial backbone, supporting both club and national team activities.

The suspension raises uncertainty over the future of the FDH Bank Premiership, which had just kicked off amid high expectations from fans and stakeholders.

Football analysts Enock Banda said the decision should serve as a wake up call to football authorities to resolve their differences and restore order in the game’s administration.

Supporters, who had turned up in large numbers anticipating the season opener, were left frustrated by the confusion, with many now fearing the broader impact of the sponsorship freeze.

As the situation unfolds, attention now shifts to SULOM and FAM to find common ground and safeguard the future of football in Malawi before more damage is done.
