Silver Strikers have moved to the top of the FDH Bank Premiership table after playing out a goalless draw against Goshen City Dedza Dynamos FC at Silver Stadium on Sunday.
The stalemate saw both sides move one place up the league standings, with Silver Strikers replacing Mighty Wanderers at the summit despite both teams being tied on 29 points.
Silver Strikers occupy first position on goal difference, while Mighty Wanderers have dropped to second despite having collected the same number of points.
The home side, however, could not celebrate their return to the top with a victory after Goshen City Dedza Dynamos produced a disciplined performance to secure a valuable point away from home.
Goshen City Dedza Dynamos now sit 12th on the table with 14 points from 14 matches, as they continue their fight to retain their place in Malawi’s top-flight league.
Silver Strikers head coach Peter Mgangira admitted that the result was not what his team had hoped for but insisted that there was no reason to panic.
“Things are not yet bad, although this is not the result we expected,” said Mgangira.
Mgangira said this season’s competition has proved highly competitive because every team is coming into matches well prepared, adding that Goshen City also arrived ready for the challenge.
For Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, the point could prove important in their battle at the lower end of the table.
Acting head coach Lazarus Nyamera said the result had given his team encouragement as they work towards keeping the club in the top flight.
Nyamera said his players had identified several positives from the match against Silver Strikers which they believe will help them in their upcoming fixtures.
Willard Tathedwa was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance during the encounter.
The Silver Stadium draw was one of four FDH Bank Premiership matches played on Sunday, with only one ending in victory and the other three producing draws.
LUANAR Mitundu FC and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets shared the spoils, while Karonga United and Chitipa United also settled for a draw.
Civil Service United were the only team to register a victory on the day, beating MAFCO 1-0.
