Duma’s Testimony? The Physics of Illusion

At the heart of parliamentary inquiry into the tragic crash of Saulos Chilima’s aircraft is Ephraim Duma, whose testimony claimed the ill- fated Dornier 228- 202 was spotted hovering a mere two metres above the ground.

It has been observed that Aviation experts immediately tore the claim apart. However, against dismissing Duma’s testimony as outright fantasy, science offers an intriguing bridge between his impossible claim and human error.

Yes, facts are that the Dornier 228 is an unyielding piece of traditional fixed- wing engineering, not a rotary- wing helicopter. It possesses no aerodynamic mechanism to park itself in mid- air.

For a fixed- wing plane, forward velocity is the literal breath of life; without forward motion to push air over its wings and generate lift, aerodynamic physics dictates an immediate, catastrophic stall. It does not hover—it drops.

However, the human eye is easily deceived, and several mechanical and optical phenomena may explain why an observer genuinely believed a moving aircraft was perfectly stationary.

Beyond the classic psychological anchors of a blank sky or a head- on flight path, physics and meteorology offer two further compelling arguments that could substantiate the perception of Duma’s claim.



While an airplane requires airspeed to stay aloft, its speed relative to the ground (ground speed) can drop drastically.

The Dornier 228 is celebrated for its Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) capabilities, designed to fly safely at remarkably low speeds.

If the aircraft encountered an incredibly powerful, localized headwind—such as a severe weather updraft or microburst—the wind speed hitting the wings could generate the necessary lift to prevent a stall, even if the plane’s forward movement over the ground slowed to a crawl. To a ground observer, the aircraft would appear to be hanging miraculously still in the air.

Duma specifically noted the plane was two metres above the ground. In aerodynamics, when an aircraft flies within one wingspan distance from the surface, it enters what is known as Ground Effect. The ground blocks the downward deflection of air and disrupts wingtip vortices, drastically reducing aerodynamic drag and increasing lift.

If a pilot was desperately attempting an emergency low- altitude manoeuvre, the cushion of Ground Effect can cause a plane to “float” or glide far longer than normal at low speeds, momentarily giving the optical illusion of a stabilized hover just above the terrain.

Dumas’s testimony cannot alter the laws of aviation; the Dornier did not become a helicopter. However, between the tricks of relative velocity, missing visual anchors, and extreme STOL physics, his statements may not be a deliberate fabrication. Instead, they likely stand as a vivid testament to how easily the human mind canmisinterpret the final, desperate moments of a flight fighting against the elements.
