Mutharika stuns nation with bold austerity move, saves millions as malawi sends only 5 to UNGA for first time in history

By Jones Gadama

In a bold and decisive mark of transformational leadership, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, has once again proved why Malawi is in safe, wise and visionary hands.

The Press Release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation dated 18th September, 2026 is more than just an official communication. It is a powerful statement of discipline, patriotism and servant leadership.

President Mutharika has done what no President has ever done before in the history of this country.

Mutharika

He has refused to travel to the 81st United Nations General Assembly himself and has instead delegated Honourable Dr. George Chaponda, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to lead Malawi’s delegation.

And here is the most stunning part that has shocked Malawians in a positive way. This will be the smallest delegation Malawi has ever sent to UNGA. Only five people.

Only the Minister’s travel is being financed by government.

The four accompanying officers are fully sponsored by the United Nations, while Honourable Chipiliro Mpinganjira who will attend Climate Week NYC 2026 is being sponsored by iRise Global Inc.

This is what we call leadership by example. This is what we call putting Malawi first.

While other leaders in the past turned UNGA into a family trip and a party zealots jamboree using taxpayers money, President Mutharika has chosen prudence over pomp, economy over extravagance, and country over self.

Malawians will remember that in 2024, former President Lazarus Chakwera travelled with a 147 member delegation to UNGA, draining public resources.

Today, President Mutharika has sent only five. The contrast is clear. The difference is leadership.

This wise decision means three important things for Malawi. First, it makes huge economic sense.

We cannot rebuild the economy while spending carelessly abroad. Every Kwacha saved is a Kwacha that will go to medicines, to schools, to fertilizer and to development.

Second, it restores moral authority. Reform must start at the top and State House and Capital Hill have shown the way.

How can government ask Malawians to sacrifice if the presidency itself is wasteful? President Mutharika is leading from the front.

Third, it strengthens our image abroad. The world will respect Malawi not for the size of its delegation, but for the seriousness and discipline of its government.

A small, focused and professional team tells investors that Malawi is now a responsible and business-ready nation.

And this is not happening in isolation. President Mutharika’s government has also taken another bold austerity measure by suspending all workshops and meetings being held outside government premises.

For years, public funds were being wasted in expensive hotels and lodges for workshops that can be done in government boardrooms. President Mutharika has said no to that waste.

This is the kind of President Malawi prayed for. A President who feels the pain of Malawians.

A President who understands that public money is not for luxury but for service. A President who is selfless, decisive and focused on fixing the economy.

Malawians across the country are saluting this statesmanlike action. This is a commendable step that deserves to be emulated across all ministries, departments and agencies.

Indeed, Malawi is back on track. Malawi is in safe and wise hands under President Arthur Peter Mutharika.
