The Football Legends Association (FLA) has commended two of its members, Lovemore Fazili and Robert Ng’ambi, for their contribution to the Malawi Scorchers’ historic campaign in Morocco.
Fazili and Ng’ambi were among the coaching staff that helped the Scorchers reach the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament in Rabat, Morocco.
The achievement also saw Malawi secure qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Brazil next year.
The Scorchers’ impressive run has been described as one of the country’s major achievements in women’s football, with the team competing against some of Africa’s strongest sides.
Speaking during FLA’s annual general meeting, association president Jim Kalua said Fazili and Ng’ambi deserved special recognition for their contribution to the national team’s success.
Kalua said honouring the two football experts would help motivate them to continue working hard and contributing to the development of Malawian football.
He said the achievements recorded in Morocco demonstrated the importance of having experienced football professionals involved in the development of national teams.
According to Kalua, the Scorchers’ qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup represents a significant milestone for Malawi and should inspire more investment in women’s football.
He further called for the achievements of the coaching staff and players to be recognised as Malawi prepares for the global tournament in Brazil.
Fazili and Ng’ambi have been part of the technical team that guided the Scorchers through a competitive WAFCON campaign, culminating in their historic appearance in the final.
FLA says the contribution of its members should serve as an inspiration to other former footballers and coaches to continue playing an active role in the development of the sport.
The association has since expressed confidence that Fazili, Ng’ambi and the rest of the technical team will help the Scorchers prepare adequately for their first FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance.
