The 2022 Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority ( MACRA) data base has revealed that 31.4 % of Malawians watch and download pornography on internet.
According to MACRA this is how people have been using the internet In Malawi since February 2022
37.6% – Social Media sites (Facebook, WhatsApp, Tiktok, Instagram, Instagram .. in that order)
31.4% – Pornography websites
20% – Betting ( Premier Bet, Worldstar)
4 % – YouTube
2.1 % – Netflix, Spotify & DSTV
1.8 % – News and Educational Websites
3.1 % – Other
In March this year, MACRA did issue a warning about accessing pornography online.The Regulatory Authority warned the public that it is against the law to possess, distribute and transmit pornographic material in the country.
MACRA did urge all Malawians that while exercising their freedom of online communication, they should be mindful of the laws governing the same.
MACRA says the laws include the Electronic
Transactions and Cyber Security Act, 2016, specifically section 24 (2) and section 85.
